Obituary for Louise Anne Calder

Staten Island Louise "Anne" Calder (nee Pickford) - 86 left this earth and entered into eternity on Wednesday, September 26, 2018. Raised in Park Slope, Brooklyn, she eventually settled in Bay Ridge where she raised her family. Later in life, she and her husband settled in Whiting, NJ. She spent her last years at Golden Gate Rehabilitation Center in Staten Island, NY.

Louise was a graduate of Wesley College, Dover, DE and then attended the Tobe-Coburn Fashion Institute in Manhattan, NY. She was a buyer for Stern Brothers Department Stores and Abraham & Strauss in Brooklyn. After leaving her job, she became involved in her community and in education. For over 20 years, she served as PTO president and a member of the District 20 School Board, later becoming the president of the School Board and the President's Council. She was a public school activist who fought for the rights and a better education for all students; earning many awards and accolades for her service.

Louise loved Disney World, history, gardening, sewing, cooking and baking. She enjoyed her Victorian home in Bay Ridge and enjoyed spending summers at her house by the beach that her father built in Roxbury, Breezy Point.She also loved her Newfoundland heritage and her Newfie dogs, Little Bear and Slate. Some of her fondest memories were her trips back "home" and keeping in touch with her cousins. Louise was a member of the Bay Ridge United Methodist Church where she was involved in the Sunday school program.

Louise is predeceased by her husband, Richard Calder, and a daughter, Margaret Louise, as well as her parents, Louise and Abram Pickford,and her sister, Madeleine Belle and many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her children Madeleine Hristov Humphreys, Janis (Dennis) O'Kane, Douglas (Donna) Calder, Marjorie (John III) Maguire and Jane (Elvis Kraljev) Calder. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jennifer (James) Quackenbush, Ryan (Kerri) Hristov, John IV (Laura) Maguire, Lauren Calder,Emily (Greg) Spatola, Richard (Rachael Neal) Maguire, AJ (Linda Kim) Humphreys, Michael (Brett Nance) Maguire, Doug Calder, Lindsey Calder, Olivia (Marc) Weinstein, and Alyssa Guglielmino and 11 great grand children (Elle, James, Kayla, Kael, Emma, Ava, Mackenzie, John V, Charlotte, Mason and Logan).
