Obituary for Irene A. Smith

Irene Ann (Bailey) Smith was born on February 20, 1942 to Mary (Borik) Bailey and Hubert Bailey. She passed away on Friday, October 21, 2022, at Staten Island University Hospital North.

Irene lived a full life focused on her children and grandchildren. She was doted upon by her husband.

In August of 1979 Irene accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour, recognizing there was nothing she could do to get to Heaven except to trust in God and the promise of His Son. Irene did her best to live a Christian life and it is evident through her children and grandchildren professing to know Jesus Christ as their Savior as well – Matthew 7:16 “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”

Irene graduated from Port Richmond High School with honors in 1959. She spent several years working as a secretary in downtown Manhattan until she became a Mom, at which point her family became her focus. She was always at every parent teacher meeting, school play, class Mom for all of her children, dance recitals, baseball games, football games, fundraisers – you name it, she was there!

Irene left this earth surrounded in love with her family and went to be with the Lord. She is now worshipping and singing His praises directly in His presence with her beloved son William “Billy” Smith, her parents Mary (Borik) Bailey & Hubert Bailey, her sister Lillian (Bailey) Servidio and her brother George “Billy” Bailey.

She is survived by her husband Gerald “Dick” Smith, Sr., her children Cindy (Smith-Lang) Novello and her husband Todd Novello, Patricia “Patti” Smith, Gerald “Jerry” Smith, Jr., Raymond Smith and his wife Krista Zarella Smith, her grandchildren Patrick Lang, James Lang, Nicole Lang, Nicholas Smith Anthony Smith, and TJ Novello, as well as her much loved cousin Bernice (Bailey) Dietrich who is 101 years and 10 months. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Irene was a giver – she wanted to see everyone happy! She leaves a void that cannot be filled. II Timothy 4:7 “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:”

As an avid Disney fan, we leave you with the words of Winnie the Pooh “If ever there is a tomorrow when we're not together, There is something you must always remember, You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think, But the most important thing is, even if we are apart, I'll always be with you."

Friends will be received Saturday, 10/29, and Sunday, 10/30, from 2-4 and 7-9 at Scarpaci Funeral Home, 6389 Amboy Road, Staten Island, NY. Memorial Service will be held on Monday, 10/31, at 10am from Scarpaci Funeral Home and officiated by Pastor Mike Veach of First Bible Church.
